Pete Kirby, Bashful Brother Oswald

I could not do something on the Grand Ole Opry and not mention this person. Largely through listening to his distinctive dobro music, along with Jerry Byrd and others like Don Helms in Hank Williams’ Drifting Cowboys band and Little Roy Wiggins with Eddy Arnold - I got hooked on the Hawaiian Steel Guitar and dobro.

Try as I may, I’ll never come close to his sound nor the smoothness of his style. His recordings I’ve worn out from playing them so much. Nobody comes close with songs like Wabash Cannonball, Great Speckled Bird, Carry Me Back to the Mountains, I’ll Be All Smiles Tonight, The End of the World, and more. If only they would let him record more.

Long time member of Roy Acuff’s Smokey Mountain Boys, he was part of Roy’s style with that melodic dobro chiming sound.

Whenever I visited the Opry, I made sure I was in place for a close up if I could at the stage when Roy Acuff was on - for I wanted to watch a bit of Oz in action.
